Venus Williams Breaks Down in Tears While Talking About Fatal Car Crash: ‘I’m Completely Speechless

Venus Williams spoke to the media Monday for the first time since the fatal car crash on June 9 in Florida in which she was involved.

In a press conference following her first round victory at Wimbledon, Williams spoke only briefly and in vague terms about the accident, for which Palm Beach Gardens police deemed her to be at fault.

“There are really no words to describe, like, how devastating and, yeah, I’m completely speechless…” Williams said, her words trailing off as she was overcome by emotion.

Williams began to tear up, and then she stepped out of the room to compose herself. When she returned, a moderator informed journalists that Williams would only answer questions related to tennis.

The tennis star was driving, according to the police report, at about 5 m.p.h when a car driven by Linda Barson crashed into hers. But the police found that Williams violated Barson’s right of way by, according to witnesses, running a red light just as Barson’s light turned green. The impact severely injured Barson’s husband, Jerome Barson. He died 13 days after the accident from his injuries.
